GA to hold Twitter chat to mark World AIDS Day – WALB-TV

ATLANTA (AP) – Georgia health officials plan to host a HIV and AIDS Twitter chat to mark World AIDS Day.

The hour-long chat will use the hash tag “(hash)GeorgiaWAD2012″ and is set to start at noon Saturday.

Discussion topics are set to include new HIV and AIDS numbers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the AIDS epidemic in Georgia, and what is being done to fight the spread of HIV in the state. There will also be information about HIV testing and AIDS treatment and prevention.

The CDC recently awarded the Georgia Department of Public Health $2.5 million to help get HIV-positive people to seek treatment.

  4. I am thinking of applying to the Emerging Leaders Program with the Department of Health and Human Services. I am getting my M. Ed. in Counseling and Ed. Psychology in May 2010. By that time, I will have a year and 2 months experience as a field data abstractor working on a developmental disabilities study for the CDC and 6 months experience as a surveillance officer for acute cases of hepatitis in the Georgia area as a state employee. I was thinking of applying to the Psychology/ Behavioral Sciences track on this program. It looks phenomenal and would be a great(almost dream type opportunity for me). Does anyone have advise on applying to the program, or any other similar programs to get a good paying career going in the behavioral sciences track of public health?

If you lived in the state of Georgia and could not afford medical insurance are there any free benefits that can be claimed or would you need to hire a lawyer to apply for them from the government? I’m working on some coursework in the UK and I would appreciate some help.

  7. Is this one vital, vital reason why illegals must undergo heath screenings before being allowed in America HIV is a serious medical problem and do we ned ilegals sneaking with such harsh medical conditions and the Lation’s do not & take precatuions this poses a medical danger to illeglsl and legal alike did you know ab ilegal with HIV can run up tab into the milions of dollars .How can America afford to provide treatment at a time when our country is going broke do we realy need to import HIV ?Washington, DC (CapitalWirePR) December 2, 2008 –On World AIDS Day December 1, 2008 the Latino Commission on AIDS released “Shaping the New Response: HIV/AIDS and Latinos in the Deep South” Report, documenting the extraordinarily high rates of HIV and AIDS diagnoses among Latinos, the apparent contributing factors to this health crisis and recommendations for future action in the Deep South (Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina)*. Shaping the New Response reached its conclusions after two years of research including more than 300 interviews, 8 roundtables covering all 7 states, analysis of epidemiological data, and a review of relevant studies.

There are 2,052,227 Latinos in these seven states (as of 2007) which is an increase of 431% since the 1990 census. Latinos range from a high of 7.5% of the population in Georgia to 1.8% for Mississippi. But in rates of HIV and AIDS diagnosis Latinos present a startling portrait. While Latinos have far lower rates of HIV and AIDS diagnoses than that among Blacks in the region, Latinos have significantly higher rates than that among Whites in the Deep South. In 2006 Latinos were 2 to 3 times more likely to be living with HIV/AIDS and 3 to 10 times more likely to be diagnosed with AIDS than Whites in the Deep South.

“Many public health professionals in the region are asking Latinos are presenting with such high levels of HIV/AIDS. The answers from the Commission’s research are relatively simple – a lack of culturally and linguistically competent prevention and health care resources, distrust and lack of access to prevention and care providers given the anti-immigrant social and legal restrictions imposed by most States in the region, a well organized commercial sex industry, and a complete lack of programs for Spanish speaking men who have sex with men,” said Tim Frasca, primary author of Shaping the New Response.

“There are many professionals in health care institutions, community based organizations and State/County health departments that understand the difference between a public health crisis and the politics of the immigration debate. These local heroes are attempting to reverse these health outcomes while responding to an overwhelming health crisis among regional Black populations and there are elected officials who pretend that the problem does not exist. Most of the public health professionals we spoke to understood that the Latino HIV/AIDS epidemic can have extensive repercussions for each State and they have great ideas on how to stop it”, said Guillermo Chacon, Vice-President of the Latino Commission on AIDS.

“If we are to attack this health crisis like any other health emergency, public health needs the freedom and resources to do its job. We need a local infrastructure that will advocate and provide for increased services for Latinos at risk for and with this disease. Much basic research needs to be done on creative models for prevention and care for this very mobile population. No one should delude themselves into thinking that the variables that are producing this HIV/AIDS emergency are not also affecting other areas of critical health care for Latinos,” said Miriam Vega, PhD, Director of Research and Evaluation for the Commission.

The report contains a synthesis of recommendations from roundtables held in each state on Latinos and HIV/AIDS and additional recommendations from the Latino Commission on AIDS. The full copy of the Report is available at http://www.latinoaids.org . Printed copies of Shaping the New Response: HIV/AIDS and Latinos in the Deep South with illustrations can also be ordered at this website.

  8. My mom is 46 and her job does not supply health insurance. She does not make a lot of money at all and she has a skin disease that needs treatment. Paying $200 a month for health insurance is out of the question. Does anyone know of an affordable plan that would allow her to see a doctor and get the treatment she needs?? Thanks!

  9. ATLANTA — Each had crossed the border years before, smuggled across the desert by a coyote, never imagining the journey would lead to a drab and dusty clinic on the ninth floor of Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.

Some knew before the crossing that they had diabetes or lupus or high blood pressure, but it was only after they arrived that their kidneys began to fail. To survive, they needed dialysis at a cost of about $50,000 a year, which their sporadic work as housekeepers, painters and laborers could not begin to cover.

And so they turned to Grady, a taxpayer-supported safety-net hospital that would provide dialysis to anyone in need, even illegal immigrants with no insurance or ability to pay. Every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday morning, the 15 or so patients would settle into their recliners, four to a room, and while away the monotonous three-hour treatments by chitchatting in Spanish.

That all changed on Oct. 4, when the strapped public hospital closed its outpatient dialysis clinic, leaving 51 patients — almost all illegal immigrants — in a life-or-death limbo.

For Grady, which has served Atlanta’s poor for 117 years, it was an excruciating choice, a stark reflection of what happens when the country’s inadequate health care system confronts its defective immigration policy.

Like other hospitals, particularly public hospitals, Grady has been left to provide costly treatments to nonpaying illegal residents who most likely could not have obtained such care in their home countries. American taxpayers and health care consumers have borne the expense.

Over time, the mounting losses have compromised Grady’s charitable mission, forcing layoffs, increases in fees and the elimination of services. With limited exceptions, illegal immigrants are ineligible for public insurance programs like Medicaid and Medicare and often cannot afford private coverage. When major illness strikes, they have few options but to go to emergency rooms, which are required by federal law to treat anyone whose health is deemed in serious jeopardy.

Some of the Grady dialysis patients have chosen to return to their countries, encouraged by the hospital’s offer of free airfare, cash payments, three months of paid dialysis and assistance in seeking insurance or other long-term remedies. Others are trying their luck in states where Medicaid policies may be less restrictive.

But most remain in Atlanta, taking full advantage of a last-minute offer by the hospital, in response to a lawsuit, to pay for three months of dialysis at commercial clinics. They are hopeful that the reprieve will buy time for the lawsuit to progress or for private dialysis providers to take them as charity cases.

“No place in Mexico would have offered dialysis for free,” he said, sitting in the spare apartment he shares with his girlfriend and their 13-year-old son. “It was better to be here. I am really grateful that this is possible in this country, because if I were in my country I would already have died” http://rds.yahoo.com/_ylt=A0geuo8.xntMkcYAlh5XNyoA;_ylu=X3oDMTE0bmtwbGc3BHNlYwNzcgRwb3MDMTMEY29sbwNhYzIEdnRpZANINjE5XzE1Ng–/SIG=12guc7snc/EXP=1283266494/**http%3a//www.nytimes.com/2009/11/21/health/policy/21grady.html
There was not enough space to include all the other care centers. I never mentioned that there weren’t any citizens who didn’t pay for their care, either. But they are citizens, and taxpayers are obligated to pay for services for citizens, or didn’t you know that? Also, if you read the article, it clearly states that the illegals go to the emergency rooms after they cause the closing of one care center they just move on to the next. It doesn’t matter how old the article is, there are still hospitals being closed due to unpaid bills by illegal aliens. If you don’t know what a supporter is, maybe you should stay in school.
Oh, yes they do claim illegals don’t receive free medical care! I’ve read several over the past couple of days where some claim, “They don’t get free healthcare! They get a bill….” I wish I could name names…..

  11. Jack Bauer says:

The right wants to privatize everything,

In the health care industry the only way the insurance companies can survive if they are to end their discrimination against those with preexisting conditions is for everyone to be covered.

The math does not work out unless all people are compelled to buy insurance—this is something the insurance companies lobbied for to go along with the Affordable Care Act.

Right wing philosophy is a walking contradiction.

Obama care is privatization. Why are they opposed to it? If there were no mandate, there would be the public option.

The Gwinnett County Police Department and City of Snellville Police Department, from the 1970s-2000s runs a mind control amnesia site.

As motorists turn on to the north end of Mountain View Road in NW Snellville, Georgia they are blue-lighted by police involved with Satanic mind control cults. If a motorists stops too soon they are told by the uniformed officer to pull to the south end near the swim community entrance. Tickets are not given to the motorists to avoid documentation of being at the site. Instead the motorists are told hypnotic trigger words and are interrogated. The subjects are asked if they are aware of the level of the witchcraft/devil worship conspiracy being perpetrated by the Gwinnett County Police Department in the community, if they know the name of the anti-Christ, and if they have any evidence against their department. Women are often ordered to disrobe and are photographed and videotaped. Sex acts between females (women and teen drivers and children passengers) and serial rapist Gwinnett/Snellville police sometimes take place. Rape with canines.

Gwinnett County 1997 Bilderberger site. Lion Throne/Illuminati. Bush family. Gwinnett D.A.

Police use false road blocks under the cover of “gas-line leaks” to cover for Satanic priests in white robes and white kats (egyptian-style cloth head coverings) who perform Satanic rituals on the north-east side of the intersection of Oak and Mtn. View roads. Sometimes hundreds of neo-pagans attend in very quiet ceremonies designed not to raise suspicion by the public.

Any interested videographers apply FOIA with Snellville Police chief about the fired officers committing rape against women and children in back of a local church (women sometimes told to pull on to an isolated lane further to the west behind a church and an A-frame home). Use FOIA data and interviews with locals to contact Atlanta newspaper for exposé. Attempt to ask around about any former South Gwinnett High School students that used to refer to the site as the ‘Police MKULTRA Stop’, back in the late 1970s/early 1980s). Please, this is a highly evil and corrupt organization. This is a very serious matter, please.

Caution: Police and D.A. are extremely dangerous. Food tampering in local restaurants and homes. Death threats, threats against employment and health.

The Gwinnett Police have threatened Washington, D.C., that they will always use that site for Satanic ritual purposes and not to attempt to mind their business or to attempt to mind the business of their high priests/priestesses of the local hive. Local congressmen are a fraud. Portal to hell/soul harvest/massive conspiracy. Gwinnett County Police Department of Professional Standards are sick, crass, joke-cracking, ill people.

Ask locals about the tornados that have struck the two trees on the north-east side of the intersection of Mtn. View and Oak. Acquire FOIA data from Snellville Police chief about why the fired officers committing the rapes were not subject to prosecutions.

Bush family daughter, Barbara Pierce Bush, routine occult witch visitor to Gwinnett. Kroger Pres. Bruce Lucia and children.

If any females or anybody else is able to remember please petition Washington, D.C. directly for intervention against Gwinnett County government/police/sheriff/D.A., immediately.

This is not false or a hoax in any form. Please. I have already contacted the FBI hundreds of times and they are sick threatening people.

We want to decline erythromycin eye ointment when our baby is born, but I read on some sites that it is required by law. Is this true? Has anyone declined this ointment that lives in Georgia? What did you have to do to decline? Sign a waiver or just inform the hospital during check in?
The ointment is given to prevent blindness caused by mothers that have certain STDs, not for “routine” bateria. The ointment is not even effective against Group Strep B, it is specificly used to prevent issues if the mother has an STD, which I do not. The negative side effects out weigh the positive, if you do not have an STD. That’s why I am declining.

  24. After a very bizarre and traumatic year, I have realized I need help. I get angry very easy, haven’t had a romantic relationship in over 2 years, get extremely unmotivated, and often have very dark and self-destructive thoughts.

This is certainly not normal. I tried to manage it myself and it hasn’t really helped out.

So the big question is: where the heck does a person with a very limited income (less than $12,000/year) with no mental health coverage on insurance go? If it helps for more specifics, I live near Hilton Head, SC and Savannah, GA.

    Thanks in advance!

  26. Felipe Matos graduated from a two-year college with an associate degree and honors for his academic achievements. But he put his dreams of earning a bachelor degree on hold because immigration laws make it financially impossible.Matos and three other undocumented students are walking 1,500 miles — from Miami to Washington, D.C. — to promote in-state tuition at public colleges for illegals and other aspects of immigration reform. The students were in Atlanta last week and plan to arrive in the nation’s capitol in May.

“When I arrived in this country I was told that if I worked hard and did my best, all my dreams would come true,” said Matos, 24, who attended school in Miami. “That is what I did but my dream is on hold. My dream may be simple but all I want to do is go into a room of high school students and teach them and tell them that they have talent and can do anything if they put their minds to it.”

For nearly a decade Congress has debated bills that would grant legal status to undocumented minors and guarantee them in-state tuition at public colleges. Immigration bills are currently before Congress but they face competition from those tied to the economy and health care.

Reform has implications for Georgia, which saw its illegal immigrant population grow by 20,000 to 480,000 in 2008, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Georgia was one of the few states to experience an increase, according to the report.

It’s difficult to determine how many undocumented students attend Georgia’s public colleges. The state doesn’t track the data and students are not required to disclose their status when they enroll

Republican state representatives in North Carolina voted to override Democratic Gov. Bev Perdue’s veto of the state budget Wednesday morning, ensuring that a provision to strip all federal and state money from Planned Parenthood will take effect on July 1. North Carolina is now the third state, after Indiana and Kansas, to defund the family planning provider because it also provides abortions.

Planned Parenthood of North Carolina (PPNC), which has nine clinics across the state, provides affordable birth control, preventative health care and family planning services to over 25,000 men and women. Without the $434,000 a year it usually receives in state and federal funds, Planned Parenthood says it will now have to axe its teen pregnancy prevention and adolescent parenting programs and force its low-income patients to pay out of pocket.

“The biggest impact is gonna be on the men and women we serve,” said Melissa Reed, vice president of public policy for Planned Parenthood Health Systems. “There are 12- to 14-week waits for women to get into the health department for birth control or breast cancer screenings, but we can see patients the very same week. The health department relies on Planned Parenthood to fill that gap, and now we will be prohibited from serving as that essential safety net provider.”

PPNC receives funds through the Title X Family Planning Program and state-funded birth control programs as a way to provide discounted pap tests, cancer screenings and birth control for low-income, uninsured patients. The Hyde Amendment prevents state and federal money from being used to pay for abortions.

Unlike Indiana, which blocked Planned Parenthood’s ability to contract with Medicaid, North Carolina clinics will continue to be able to serve Medicaid recipients. It’s the low-income, uninsured patients who don’t qualify for Medicaid that will now be falling through the cracks, Reed said, since PPNC will no longer be able to offer them the same low-cost services.

Conservative state lawmakers have been flogging Planned Parenthood for its association with abortions this past week during debates over the defunding bill and another bill that would restrict access to abortions. Rep. Pat McElraft (R-Emerald Isle) told her colleagues on the House Floor a tearful story about her nephew and his girlfriend’s experience with Planned Parenthood 14 years ago.

“She went to Planned Parenthood, asked them what her choices were,” she said. “They told her she would have a deformed baby because of her drug use, her only option was abortion.”

“He went with her to what she describes as a very dark house. In that very dark house, a nurse attended to her. My nephew asked the nurse if she could at least see the ultrasound. The nurse said, ‘I can’t do that, I’ll get fired.’”

McElroy later admitted that the incident happened in Georgia, not North Carolina, and that the “dark house” where the abortion occurred was actually not a Planned Parenthood clinic. The family planning provider estimates that abortions account for less than 3 percent of the services it provides.

According to a recent poll, 57 percent of North Carolina voters oppose the measure to defund Planned Parenthood and teen pregnancy prevention programs, and Reed said people have already started sending donations to keep PPNC afloat.

“Beginning at 7:30 a.m. this morning, we had donations coming in,” she told HuffPost. “North Carolinians really support Planned Parenthood and are stepping up to support our efforts.”

Planned Parenthood of Indiana received an unprecedented $116,000 in donations from across the world after it was defunded in May, allowing it to continue serving its Medicaid patients for more than a month after the bill took effect.

Reed said PPNC is now considering all options — including litigation against the state — to hang onto its low-income patients. A similar lawsuit is currently being heard in Indiana.

“They are using the budget to punish Planned Parenthood for other services we provide, such as abortion care, which does not even use any of this money,” Reed said. “They can’t legally do that.”

Like the House, the North Carolina Senate is expected to vote to override the veto. That vote is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.

  34. California is closer to ending illegal “Anchor Baby” births
    http://www.examiner.com/x-10317-San-Diego-County-Political-Buzz-Examiner~y2009m7d1-California-is-closer-to-ending-illegal-Anchor-Baby-births
San Diego – Californians are one step closer to ending the “Anchor Baby” births by illegals throughout the state. In an effort to close ever-expanding social service programs the California Taxpayer Protection Act of 2010, Initiative 09-0010 has begun the signature process.

The Attorney General of California released the last bit of paperwork required to get the “birth tourism” legislation moving forward. Petitioners must now collect approximately 450,000 California registered voter signatures.

At a press conference in front of the City Hall Administration building, Ted Hilton- author of the bill, Bill Morrow-retired California State Senator, Peter Nunez-former United States Attorney and Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Enforcement joined together to inform the residents of California to take the immigration issue into their own hands.

This bill is for “real world citizens,” Morrow said. “The people of California have an opportunity to curb the illegal immigration. Many in California may not have seen the grass lately, but we’ve been seeding our roots.”

According to the Attorney General for the state of California, who prepares the title and summary, the state would deny birth certificates to children born to undocumented parents unless the mother provides a fingerprint and other information to be given to the federal authorities.

Finally, the initiative eliminates benefits for children in child-only CalWORKS cases which are not mandated by federal law.

For those who want reassurance, the public benefit restrictions in this initiative have already passed and are on the books in five states, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Oklahoma and Arizona.

The California ballot initiative is closely worded to the law on the books in Oklahoma, says Hilton.

Many in California believe the federal government has dropped the immigration ball over the last 40 years. “In Washington D.C. they have a few nicknames; reform is code word for amnesty,” Nunez explained.

He goes on to say that if Americans allow another amnesty wave to come ashore a new wave of immigrants will head to America – this time the number could be 40 million.

Again Nunez says, “It’s time for the states residents to take care of the illegal immigration problem, the federal, state and local governments have failed.”

As far as immigration containment issues there are three areas that need to be addressed; Border security, workforce enforcement and doling out of public benefits. This ballot initiative addresses the latter, benefits.

The crux of this issue is the “birth tourism.” The state currently pays $400 million per year in ‘normal childbirth,’ according to the state of California Department Health’s latest records. “This doesn’t include the cost of premature births which the Center for Disease Control estimates as 12 percent of all births. The costs to taxpayers for these births and those born with disabilities are over $1 billion more annually,” Hilton said.

According to California State Attorney General office, the initiative would save the taxpayers around $1 billion annually from eliminating the child-only CalWORKS program. Morrow believes the number is much higher. “If you add the costs for ending public benefits, the state will save much more than $1 billion per year.”

Another concerned group that has come out and supports the 2010 ballot initiative are African-Americans.

Ted Hayes who recently ran for congress against Maxine Waters in Los Angeles said, “American black men will stop the birth tourism problem connected to the 14th Amendment.”

“That law was meant for West African slaves, not Latinos crossing the border illegally,” Hayes firmly stated. “The Latinos are taking money from the sweat from our backs; we intend to take it back.”

Nunez concurs, “The 14th Amendment was a way for this country to overcome slavery. Our current national policy doesn’t even allow diplomats in this country to gain citizenship through birth.”

Hayes admits it’s time African-Americans to start fighting for their state and country. “The Latinos want to make this about race. I’ll make this about race. The sponsors of this bill are not racists, they’re Americans and we stand with them.”

Backed up by fact, Hilton notes in 1987 California’s teenage birth rate was below the national average. One short year later, pre-natal care commenced for illegal aliens. “Four years later that caused the state’s teenage birth rate to grow to twice the national average and the highest of any state,” says Hilton.

According to the State of California, Department of Public Health’s latest birth records show there were 562,157 live births. A staggering 293,276 were born to a mother of Hispanic background.

  35. I am a recent graduate with a bachelors in accounting. I am thinking of going back to school to get a master’s degree in public health. I have an aptitude for numbers but also would like to help people and the community. I am interested in possibly going in to public health management/administration so that I can help people but also use my business background. I’m wondering if a Public Health degree is the way to go if, for example, I want to work in a hospital with more of a management position? Will my accounting degree and a public health degree be more of an advantage? Or could I still go in to health management with just an accounting degree?

Lately I’ve been toying around with the idea of quitting my job and living off the land. However, I would still like to make an income, possibly from selling fruits and vegetables. After reading several lists of “most profitable crops” I chose to focus on the oyster mushroom.

Mushrooms can be grown indoors with relatively little sunlight. This is ideal because I don’t currently have a backyard. However, mushrooms release hundreds of spores into the air every hour, and breathing in these spores can cause flu-like symptoms. I could grow the mushrooms inside of a rented storage room but that would greatly increase my overhead.

Mushrooms are fragile and don’t hold up well when transported over long distances. This gives local farmers like me an advantage over giant farming corporations. My customers will know they are buying the freshest mushrooms available in their area.

    These are my selling points:

Buying local guarantees quality and freshness. It protects the environment by reducing energy consumption. It also builds a sense of community, and pumps money back into the local economy.

My ideal clients are health-conscious, care about the environment, prefer natural products, and are involved with their community. They are willing to spend a little extra for healthy high-quality food.

Here’s the problem: I live in a small town on the outskirts of Atlanta, Georgia. We don’t have any high-end restaurants that I could sell my mushrooms to. We do have a few small farmer’s markets but I doubt I will make much profit selling expensive gourmet mushrooms to simple country folks. There are several gourmet restaurants in Atlanta but the commute would greatly increase my overhead.

So there you have it. The pro’s and con’s of mushroom farming. Should I proceed with my shroomy endeavors or should I choose another type of product?

With all of the technical and medicinal advances that we have made over the past 20 years, you would think that things would be better than it is now. But millions of people are infected with the
HIV and AIDS virus, especially in poor communities. Today is World AIDS Day, so that is why I bought this up. What do you think should be done to make this situation better, because it is not going away.

TODAY IS WORLD AIDS DAY so I’d like to encourage everyone to know your status regardless of your sex orientation, age, race, etc. People need NOT to fear the unknown. This is a long-time stigma that people are still scared to even discuss, and this issue has been “swept under the rug” for many years. I will continue to pray for those who struggle with the disease and suffer from the stigma. I am very hopeful to see a cure for HIV/AIDS in my lifetime. God bless you all.

Many would like to forget him but Germany will soon be seeing much more of Hitler – with a new Aids awareness campaign depicting the Nazi leader having sex.
The confronting advert shows blurred clips of a couple having sex before the end reveals the man as Hitler.
The ‘Aids is a mass murderer’ campaign will be shown on German TV and in cinemas ahead of World Aids Day on December 1.

I recognise that later in the war plans were made for D-Day and such. But I’m interested in the period between the invasion of Poland and the flanking of the Maginot Line; if and how the Allies planned to attack Germany and other Axis nations.

  42. World peace day is on the 21st september. On this day the UN calls for ceasefire around the world and helps bring aid to war torn countries. All that is asked of you is to spread the word of peace by organising an event or just by acknowledging world peace day. Whatever you do it will make a difference.

Just for one day lets have peace.
